What exactly does an Entertainment Journalist do?

I just had an SMS from a friend (and coincidentally, my mother had asked me about him today - long life!) asking me if I knew anyone who would be interested in becoming an entertainment journalist for a local newspaper. I told my parents and they immediately said I should go for it. Eh? Entertainment journalists write for a reason. If you have read this blog, you will see that the only reason I am writing is to beta-test this blog site (and hopefully earn some money).

And to think that I used to enjoy writing while I was in primary school and secondary school, until the dreaded day I sat for my Cambridge English 1119 paper and had the biggest writer’s block ever. I never was a morning person (unless I stay up all night) and my brain cells only start working after lunch. Of course, after a hearty lunch, I tend to get sleepy. It’s a vicious cycle. So anyway, I remember the question I chose for the essay section. It was a narrative essay. The premise was this: I had found a person lying by the roadside, groaning in pain. I then had to write the events after discovering this person. Out of the jumble of lines I had written, only ONE line was for dialogue: “I’ll go get help!” That phrase will haunt me forever. *weeps* In the end I received a B4. Yes, yes, I know…it’s all in the past. There is a Japanese (or maybe Chinese) saying, “Let all that is past flow gently down the river” or something similarly profound. Unfortunately, my river seems to have been clogged up by the past. Oh dear…

When I really think about it, it does seem rather exciting (is it true about the free entrance for ‘media people’ to certain places? And is it true that you can get free CDs to review? Or does one have to give them away as prizes? Tee hee hee). I shall not really worry just yet. I gave the url to this blog for my friend to read to evaluate my writing (because it was shorter to text compared to my blogger url), and if the editor reads this, I am sure they’ll be thinking twice. Unless they’re really desperate, then I don’t have to worry much anyway. [Note to editor: I’m kidding!]

I don’t think I’ve reviewed anything in my life. I HAVE read reviews though. Oh, I take that back. I have written two reviews for epinions.com. My best review there is here: http://www.epinions.com/content_177987358340. So far, I’ve ‘earned’ US$4.71 for writing a ‘Helpful’ review. I think there’s a word for a review like that in Malay: berterabur. XD

I stayed indoors all day today. Was warned by my folks during lunch that there mosquitoes were ravenous outside. No ergosterol (Vit. D) for me today.

There could be a downside to my working with the newspaper. I might not be eligible to enter contests organized by the publication. *grin*
